We are a local design company serving the Central Alberta region, including Red Deer, Lacombe, Blackfalds, Sylvan Lake, Stettler, and beyond.
Our experience in the design industry stretches across several decades and encompasses a vast variety of projects and award-winning designs.
Peter Bouwsema started PJB Design in 1990, operating out of his home after several years of working for other construction companies in Central Alberta. With his education in Civil Engineering and his eye for thoughtful design, he steadily built up a portfolio of interesting projects, including the Donut Mill in Red Deer, the award-winning Victoria House apartment building in Lacombe and the renovation/conversion of the Innisfail Alliance Church, along with several beautiful homes around the area.
Brent Bouwsema joined the family business in 2003, bringing with him carpentry experience and education in architectural design. Brent's arrival marked the transition of the business from hand-drawing to computer-aided drafting. Brent's computer know-how also allowed for 3D renderings and visualizations to be added to our repertoire of services.
In 2007, Peter and Lorraine moved office from their house to its present location in the second storey of the Siding 12 office building on the east side of Lacombe. Brent began working onsite in the office in 2010.
In our years of business, we have been involved in over 4000 projects, mostly residential, ranging in size from 600 square foot cabin to a 6000 square foot executive home. We have designed a large variety of spaces, including a dental office, several medical offices, several seniors complexes, many churchesand numerous single family and multi-family homes. Our most recent notable projects include the Sunny 94 building in Lacombe, the Dolman Dental building in Lacombe and the revitalization of several historical buildings in Lacombe and elsewhere. Peter Bouwsema was born and raised in Calgary and got his first taste of design from his father, a cabinet-builder. Peter attended SAIT after high school, completing a diploma in Civil Engineering Technologies. After their marriage in 1980, Peter and Lorraine moved to Central Alberta to raise their family. He found a market in the area for well-designed, functional homes and decided to pursue it.
After raising three boys with his wife Lorraine, he embarked on a local political career and gained an insight into the inner workings of municipalities, an asset for negotiating with building control bylaws. Since taking a break from politics, he has been enjoying renovating his home, completing woodworking projects, traveling with his wife and watching the shenanigans of his six grandchildren.
Brent Bouwsema has called Lacombe home for most of his life. However, he also has an appreciation for urban living and foreign travel and the interesting and unique design ideas to be found throughout the world. Brent has several years of carpentry experience as well as a diploma in Architectural Technologies from SAIT Polytechnic.
He lives in an intentionally small house in the "numbered streets" part of Lacombe with his wife Kirstin, their four children and four fluffy chickens. He loves wine and cross country skiing, but not at the same time. He is the president of the Lacombe Cross Country Ski Club and a member of the Lacombe Art Selection Committee.
Lorraine Bouwsema was born and raised in Calgary. After her marriage to Peter in 1980, she moved to Central Alberta where she spent the better of 20 years raising her three sons. As the boys got older and PJB Design grew, stepping into the role of office administrator was a natural fit for the organized and methodical Lorraine.
When not busy with her administrative duties, Lorraine steps into her studio and where she enjoys decorative painting, particularly Christmas ornaments. She also enjoys cross-stitching, sewing and other handicrafts. She enjoys the challenge of her being the boss of the office but savours her time with her children and grandchildren the most.
Kurtis brings both carpentry and design experience to PJB Design. He grew up in Lacombe as the son of a carpenter, fetching nails and holding tools for his Dad, and went on to study and receive a Red Seal Journeyman's Ticket in Carpentry from Lethbridge College in 2010. In his ten years of carpentry work, Kurtis has also owned and operated his own residential construction business.
Kurtis has spent a number of years touring, playing with and supporting musical artists across Western Canada as a bass player. When Kurtis isn't in the office, you'll find him woodworking, playing music, and spending time with his wife Beth. It is a dream of theirs to buy an older house in the mature part of town and bring new life to it.
